There were many reasons why I finally quit WoW. Suffice to say it was something that had been building up for a long time already, then along came the news about Kung Fu Pandas to put the final nail in the coffin.

I've been playing Eve Online casually for about 8 months now. One of the things I like best about Eve is it's completely different from WoW in just about every way.

The player base seems to be quite a bit more mature too though that might be because there is no global chat channel providing a convenient soapbox for the worst sociopaths. Or maybe it's because block (Eve's equivalent to /ignore) has NO LIMIT on the number of players you can block. I love that feature and use it quite liberally!

Another point in Eve's favor is it's very cheap to play. In fact if you're any good at making money in games you can play Eve for free. You don't have to buy Eve Oline, the client is a free download and expansions are free too. All there is is a one time $5.00 activation fee and $15.00 for 30 days of game time (less if you purchase multiple months at once).

Then there are PLEX which can be purchased with real money from CCP's website or bought from other players with ISK (Eve's in-game currency) off the market in game. Any PLEX you have can be sold on the in game market for ISK or used to add 30 days time to your account. If you make enough ISK to buy PLEX you can pay for your accounts without spending any real money. I currently have 4 Eve accounts, over 50 billion ISK and easily make more than enough ISK to purchase PLEX for all the accounts every month with plenty left over to keep growing my wallet bigger.

For those who might be interested in trying Eve Online there are 2 types of free trial accounts, 14 day trials and 21 day trials. 14 day trials are available to anyone from CCP's website. 21 day trials are "Buddy" invites from existing players.

Here's a link to a free Eve Online 21 day trial from me via Eve's "buddy program". The link is safe, it leads to a secure "buddy invite" page on CCP's official Eve Online website.

Feel free to give me ( Moxnix Induli ) a shout in Eve Online if you start playing after reading this.

I'm starting a new Eve Online blog which can be found at Merchant MonarchyMoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-32165701398214421092012-07-14T07:47:00.001-06:002012-11-03T15:29:30.587-06:00Sheep and Lemmings - Don't be one!Sheep are herd animals and herd animals follow the leader. Lemmings will follow the leader right off a cliff! Many auction players behave like sheep and lemmings.

Sheep
Sheep like to play it safe. They don't come up with ideas of their own. They just follow someone else's lead, whether it be the lead of a rich player on the server, some blog author's lead or even just following to the letter some guide full of old, outdated ideas and information. Sheep come in two types, the ones that follow the lead of other players (rich ones mostly) on the server and the ones that dive right into whatever the latest post on their favorite blog says will make them "lots of gold" without knowing a thing about their server's specifics in that market. They can't understand why it never seems as profitable as promised for them. Tip: it doesn't work as well because a) your server isn't the blogger's server, conditions may be very different and b) whenever a popular blog posts about something a whole lot of new people dive into it headfirst.

Lemmings
It might take a while but sheep will usually notice (eventually!) if they're losing gold and will leave unprofitable or low profit markets. Lemmings on the other hand don't even seem to realize when they're losing a lot of gold. They'll just keep on going right over the cliff. You can take advantage of lemmings simply by posting under your cost. They'll keep undercutting and you can buy them out.

Moral of the story
Sheep will continue bleating the "buy low, sell high" mantra, droning on about how "1c undercuts keep prices high" while ridiculing more advanced strategies and talking about hitting the gold cap (years behind) as if that proves their methods are superior. They don't even realize market leaders who don't follow the herd have capped entire accounts in less time than they needed to cap just once.

If after playing the auction for a while you still can't spot the sheep and lemmings then you probably are one. Stop following the herd, lead instead of following and make more gold!
Most auction players probably already know about the shuffle but there's more to ore processing than just the shuffle.

I'm going to limit myself to talking about processing cataclysm ores today though similar methods apply to most other ore types too. I'll further limit myself to talking only about *bulk processing methods that can help us use up mountains of ore. Pre-expansion blues have set in pretty much everywhere now so most servers should have mountains of cheap ore available.

This is the time to be buying and stocking up on things you'll sell to leveling / skilling up characters during the next expansion. If your liquid gold keeps going down now but your stock keeps going up, don't panic. It sounds like you're doing it right to make a very lot of gold in the expansion!

Cataclysm Ore Types

Elementium
- prospects into uncommon and rare gems.
- produces a rough average of about 4.5 uncommon gems per stack and 1.5 rare gems per stack
- smelts into Elementium Bars

Obsidium
- prospects into uncommon and rare gems
- produces a rough average of about 6 uncommon gems per stack and 1 rare gem every 3-4 stacks
- smelts into Obsidium Bars

Pyrite
- prospects into volatile earth, uncommon and rare gems
- produces a rough average of about 4 uncommon and 3-4 rare gems per stack. Not sure about the earth.
- smelts into Pyrium Bars

Useful professions for ore processing

Jewelcrafting
- prospecting
- cutting gems
- crafting jewelry to disenchant
- great synergy with enchanting

Enchanting
- disenchanting
- crafting scrolls
- terrific synergy with other crafting professions, especially jewelcrafting and smithing

Alchemy
- gem transmutes
- great synergy with JC

Blacksmithing
- crafting armor to disenchant
- crafting belt buckles to sell
- great synergy with enchanting

Mining

- Smelting bars

- good synergy with smithing

The Shuffle

The shuffle (aka Elementium Shuffle or Obsidian Shuffle) in it's simplest form only requires Jewelcrafting. You prospect ore into gems, cut some gems and sell gems in both cut and raw uncut form.

Alchemy and Enchanting are commonly used to add value and often considered part of the shuffle.

You can make jewelry from uncommon gems to disenchant for enchanting materials. Either sell the mats for a quick profit or take it a step further, make scrolls with them and sell the scrolls, hopefully adding even more value.

- Carnelian, nightstone, hessonite, jasper and alicite are all good for this.
- Carnelian are often reserved for inferno ruby transmutes, but they DE into far more Celestial Essence than anything else (rough average of about 2.5 GREATER essences per spike).
- Jasper usually have the largest profit margin but produce a lot more dust than essences.
- Nightstone and Hessonite share the same DE table. They are usually the most expensive uncommon gems to buy (besides carnelian) but they also disenchant into more Celestial Essence than anything else (again besides Carnelian). This usually means a significantly larger total profit (not to be confused with profit margin) than Jasper or Alicite.
- Alicite are usually the cheapest useful gem to buy and have the same DE table as Jasper but you need 2 of them to make 1 pendant with. If you can buy 2 Alicite for less than half the price of 1 Jasper it's more profitable making jewelry with Alicite than with Jasper.
- Zephyrite is completely useless for the purpose of making jewelry to disenchant and usually sells for around vendor price.

At times it may also be profitable to craft jewelry that disenchants into heavenly shards from rare gems and volatiles. In my experience to date the only one that's ever been profitable for me is Viscious Amberjewel Band (4 amberjewel, 8 volatile water, 1 setting) though if gem and volatile prices continue dropping other such crafts could become profitable too. In particular if volatile air ever drops to around 5g Vicious Sapphire Ring (4 ocean sapphire, 8 volatile air, 1 setting) should be profitable DE fodder too.

With alchemy you can transmute uncommon gems into rare gems, mainly inferno rubies and shadowspirit diamonds (other gem transmutes may be profitable too but often are not). Shadowspirit Diamonds are particularly good for using up very large numbers of uncommon gems very quickly and in equal numbers (3 of each color per transmute produces 2 diamonds).

Beyond the Shuffle

That covers what most auction players do with their ore now and what's generally considered to constitute the "full" shuffle, but there are still a few more things we can do with bulk ore..

First of all there's smelting bars, which often sell for more than the ore goes for though smelting bars by itself isn't enough to make having a miner really useful. Of course you can take it a step further, add some more materials and smelt Hardened Obsidium or have alchemists transmute Truegold for you, but that's not what you really want smelting for either. What you really want smelting for is to smelt vast quantities of bars on demand so your blacksmith can use them to make huge numbers of things to disenchant.

With your blacksmith you make Stormforged Shoulders (or Stormforged Legs, both use the same materials) which disenchant into 1 heavenly shard. These take 2 folded obsidium, and 8 Elementium bars to make. If elementium and obsidium are both going for 40g a stack, your cost is 4g per bar and 8g per folded for a total cost of 48g per shard. If shards are usually 75g or more on the auction, you can make a pretty decent profit selling them in bulk at 70g each. If you sell scrolls it's always nice to be able to produce your own shards on demand and at a reasonable cost.

Then there are Ebonsteel Belt Buckles. It takes 4 Pyrium Bars, 4 Elementium Bars and 4 Volatile Earth to make one buckle. If both ores are going for 40g a stack, that's 2g per ore, 4g per bar and earth is probably under 1g each everywhere now for a total cost of 36g per buckle. If you can sell them for 72g each that's 100% profit, not too shabby. Another good way to make a sizable mountain of ore disappear.

Finally there are Carnelian Spikes, which take 3 carnelian to make. Many shufflers get so caught up in the cutthroat inferno ruby market they forget all about doing anything else with carnelian. I often see competitors selling inferno rubies for 50-60g each when carnelian are going for 25-30g and GCE are over 100g... Go figure! Of course when questioned they always insist they're making big bank on rubies because they get their ore cheap/free.

Another thing that's particularly nice about smelting, producing belt buckles and shadowspirit diamonds is you don't have to sit there repeatedly clicking a button. You can start up a long crafting queue and walk away from the computer until it's done. You don't have to disenchant them later either and they even stack, saving you plenty of bank / bag / mail space!

There are of course even more things we can do with ore such as using Engineering and Blacksmithing to craft items for sale but I don't consider that bulk processing and my purpose today was to talk about bulk ore processing.

Finally it's too bad this needs to be said, but it's become apparent it is necessary.

It's our contest, it's our gold we're giving away and we award prizes to the outfits we like best.. If you don't like the way the contest is run, or feel it's "fixed" because your buddy didn't win, you can always start your own contest and give your gold away too. The contest is intended to be a fun event that only takes an hour or two to run.

We will not consider requiring applications from contestants to pre-judge and qualify outfits before the contest. We will not spend excessive amounts of time on judging and researching outfits during the contest and boring everyone to death either.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-10607440234167751722012-02-19T21:37:00.026-07:002012-02-21T18:53:26.421-07:00Antonidas Mogging Contest Results

The first Antonidas Mogging Contest is over and was a huge success. 170,000 in gold and other prizes were handed out. A few categories were difficult to judge and some lessons were learned for the future (note to self: hold the next contest indoors so mounts aren't a problem) but overall things went very well and it was a lot of fun. We'll definitely be doing it again next month!

I've added a new page to the blog with more information on future mogging contests. That page will be updated frequently.

Being the first time, we got so wrapped up in organizing and running the contest we forgot to have someone write down the winner's names until after the contest was over. We couldn't remember the name in a couple cases.
Also, the picture at the very top of this post is Eklipse a competitor with a terrific outfit who went unnoticed due to some jerk on a mammoth following her around and standing on top of her the entire time.
Get it here: http://www.curse.com/search?search=tradeskillmaster&filter-project-sort=3

Make sure and grab all the modules you use, except Gathering, which is obsolete now.

Also, the home site for TSM has moved to: http://www.tradeskillmaster.com/

The release version has a completely redesigned auction interface with a new auction tab replacing the old sidebar, many improvements and some new functionality including a market reset scan function. So much has changed it takes a little getting to used to but once you do it's great.

*** IMPORTANT NOTE *** The Gathering module was split into two new modules, Item Tracker and Warehousing. Make sure you UNINSTALL GATHERING when installing the new version.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-77031242213243956952012-01-26T02:22:00.015-07:002012-01-26T19:03:25.064-07:00Unlimited Maelstrom CrystalsThe demand for high end chants has gone up and driven the prices of high end enchanting mats up too (particularly Maelstrom Crystals and Heavenly Shards). Maelstrom Crystals are going for 200-250g or more on many servers now. What many don't know is it's possible to manufacture unlimited Maelstrom Crystals for under 150g each.

To get the best cost per crystal you need an enchanter in a level 24 guild who's exalted with Avenger's of Hyjal. Go to the Firelands vendors, buy cloaks and disenchant them for unlimited Maelstrom Crystals. If you're not exalted you must be at least friendly to buy the cloaks.

Exalted rep with Avenger's of Hyjal gets you a 20% discount on prices with the Firelands vendors
Bountiful Bags (level 23 guild perk) gets you a 20% bonus when disenchanting
Bartering (level 24 guild perk) gets you a 10% discount and stacks with the rep discount

In the best case, assuming you're exalted with Avenger's of Hyjal and in a level 24 guild, your cost per Maelstrom Crystal comes out to about 146g. Shattering crystals will keep your cost on Heavenly Shards to about 73g too. Horde characters of the Goblin race have it even easier, all they need is friendly rep since thier racial gives them a 20% price discount with all vendors (which does NOT stack with rep discounts).

In the worst case, you need to be at least friendly and the cloaks cost 250g each. Guild perks still apply though, you'll get 10% off for Bartering, and 20% more crystals from disenchanting with Bountiful Bags. Bountiful Bags alone brings the price per Crystal down to about 208g and Bartering brings it down a little further to 187.5g per crystal (5 x (250 x 0.9)) / 6 = 187.5. Exalted rep alone without the guild perks will bring the price down to 200g per crystal.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-52086880579879837982012-01-09T12:01:00.009-07:002012-01-11T12:05:41.330-07:00TradeSkillMaster Release Version PreviewSapu's been working hard on the release version of TradeSkillMaster and it's getting close. Here's a link to the official preview at the TSM home site.

TradeSkillMaster Release Version Preview

Sapu was good enough to send me a pre release version to play with. Here are my thoughts after playing with it for a few days.

The most noticeable change is the auction house part of the User Interface has been completely redesigned. This is a huge change, everything has been moved around and it takes some time to get used to it.

The configuration window (which opens when you type /tsm) is mostly the same as before. A few things added or moved but for the most part it's the same old familiar configuration UI.

It's hard to say for sure but it seemed to me it's faster and less laggy than before. I'll be able to say more about that after running it when the server is most crowded (prime time raid nights Tues-Thurs).

A few features seem to have disappeared in the process. I don't know if they've been dropped for good or will be added back at a later date. One thing I really miss though is the ability to manually change post prices on the fly while doing a post scan. (Edit: The author says this feature will be in the release version)

Many of the changes are IMO major improvements. In particular I like how the sidebar window is gone (mostly anyhow) and has been replaced with an auction tab.

There are a few details I'm not fond of but this isn't a review, the new version hasn't been released yet and many of those details could easily be changed by release so I'm not going to get into that now. They're mostly little things anyhow, like a double click where I'm used to a single click with other addons or a key piece of information I want to see missing from a scan list.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-73716521993794200662011-12-23T06:53:00.011-07:002011-12-28T19:37:10.737-07:00Glyph Walls - are for teaching lessonsThere's been some talk about glyph walls lately. As one who frequently uses glyph walls I'd like to share my views on them.

In particular I'd like to address some of the comments and assumptions made by Croda of the marketsforgold blog. Recently he made the following series of posts regarding glyph walls.

The Glyph Wall – what is it and what is its purpose?
The Glyph Wall - how to combat it

In the first post Croda says "The ultimate aim of this strategy is one of two", then goes on to say it's either to permanently reset glyph prices or it's to force others out of the market.

Actually there's at least one more reason to use glyph walls. The reason I use them. To teach obsessive campers a lesson.

In the second post Croda talks about how to fight glyph walls. He says "The aim here is to bring all glyphs where there is a Wall down to just above cost price and let the glyph wall competitor undercut me and so make losses on each sale. Eventually they will become dispirited at crafting, posting making a small loss and repeating time and time again."

Awesome! When I post glyph walls that's exactly what I want the camper to do. Waste his time, effort and materials obsessing and stressing over undercutting me for very little profit. I will find his real threshold, post just over that and let him be the one to "become dispirited".

Croda assumes the purpose of a wall is to sell glyphs and that's not necesarily true. In fact in my experience the exact opposite is usually true. Walls and especially glyph walls often aren't intended to sell at all, they're there to cap the market at very low profit margins and teach someone a lesson.

When I use glyph walls I don't use them to sell glyphs, I use them to teach obsessive glyph campers a lesson. I'll keep the wall (or walls if they try buying me out) up for as long as it takes. Months, years, it doesn't matter, it's not costing me anything to keep the wall up and as long as they keep undercutting the wall, it doesn't take much effort to keep it up either. When the camping finally stops I raise my prices until the next obsessive camper comes along.

Doing a little simple math it costs 1s to post 1 glyph for 48 hours or 1g per 100 glyphs. If I post 5 of each glyph that comes out to approximately 20g to post 5 of every glyph in the game. An insignificant amount, easily covered by selling just 1 or 2 glyphs a day. Even if no glyphs sell, which virtually never happens, losing 20g a day won't make me go broke anytime soon (it'd take over 800 years).

I guess the moral of the story is don't assume the other guy thinks the same way you do. Doing so increases the risk your plan to combat his strategy is exactly what he wants you to do. You're doing all the work tanking the market for very little profit while he's just posting once every 2 days and laughing at you.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-45807838935101495872011-12-16T21:27:00.017-07:002011-12-28T19:37:53.896-07:00Epic Gems in Patch 4.3 - Queen's Garnet flooding and why prices are the way they areIt looks like there's another wave of cheap duped goods starting up now. There have been reports from several servers about being flooded by level 1 toons selling stacks and stacks of Queen's Garnet very cheaply. If it happens on your server don't be the sucker who buys the first few cheap stacks because it won't be long before they're selling even more for far less

There have also been a few mentions of cheap Essence of Destruction showing up in suspicious numbers on a few servers.

You've probably noticed some colors of epic gems sell better than the rare equivalents and others worse. Queen's Garnet (red) sell like crazy, Shadow Spinel (purple) hardly sell at all and other colors sell better than purple but nowhere near as well as red.

It's the same for specific cuts, some cuts that sell well as rare cuts hardly sell at all as epics. Everyone wants Queen's Garnet (red), the other gems don't sell nearly as well. Shadow Spinels (purple) have been hit the worst. Cuts like Veiled, Glinting and Etched hardly sell at all and prices are dropping fast. Yet those same cuts rare versions still sell quite well. It's the same with other colors and cuts too, Rigid Deepholm Iolite for example hardly sells at all, Sparkling, Solid and probably even Stormy far outsell Rigid... Yet Rigid Ocean Sapphire still sells well.

Ever wondered why?

The answer is in the itemization of new ilevel 397+ gear in patch 4.3. In particular PvE DPS gear has mostly red sockets, a few yellow sockets and absolutely no (zero) blue sockets. Tank and healer gear do have all 3 sockets colors though healer gear is still mostly red sockets.

Consequently the vast majority of players (DPS) no longer have any use for blue gems or hybrid purple gems (fits red and blue sockets) in the new gear. For yellow sockets they'll use an orange Lava Coral if the socket bonus is worth getting, otherwise they're just going to gem straight red for their primary stat.

Healers and tanks still use a few blue and blue hybrid cuts like sparkling and puissant but the old rare best sellers like glinting, veiled, etched are DPS gems. Even purified doesn't sell very well because it's only healers that might use them rather than all casters. Tanks will also use a lot of Fractured Lightstone but most DPS and Healers are probably going to use an orange Hybrid rather than a yellow gem. For healers and dps 25 of your primary (red) stat plus 25 of a secondary stat is better than 50 of a secondary stat.

In a nutshell, the vast majority of gems are purchased by dpsers. Dpsers now buy mostly red queen's garnet and the occasional orange lava coral. Demand for green, purple, blue and yellow is primarily from tanks and healers. When it comes to healers they buy more red than anything else meaning the demand for non red epic gems is mostly driven by tanks... The role with the least representation in raids.

Blizzard screwed up an already screwed up market even more. They listened to DPS QQ about wanting more red sockets, no blue sockets and gave in, thereby further increasing already huge demand for red gems, decreasing demand for all other colors and effectively made purple gems just another cheap garbage gem. Prices of course follow demand, shadow spinel have the least demand and lowest prices, queen's garnet have the most demand and highest prices.

So there you have it, now you know why epic gem prices are the way they are and why the best selling epic gem cuts aren't the same cuts as the best selling rare cuts.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-63684002223534577722011-12-12T05:30:00.023-07:002011-12-28T19:38:41.542-07:00Epic Gems - How the market is shaking outThis analysis is server specific to Antonidas (US) and may not match what's happening on your server though I do believe the epic gem market is following a similar pattern on most servers.

Prior to patch 4.3 I made some educated guesses and came up with the following:

What I expected
I figured epic gems would start out insanely high priced (20k+ per gem for reds, 10k+ for other colors) and virtually none would sell at those prices. I also thought it would be possible to pick up the occasional far more reasonably priced gem out of trade chat, especially after someone spent a day or two *not selling his precious red gold mine at the crazy initial prices everyone would be asking.

For the short term (the first month or so) I decided 4-5k would be a good price to buy red epic gems at and 2-3k for other colors. The plan was to buy raw gems at those prices, then cut and resell them for a 1-2k profit (maybe even more for the first few of each color).

Over the middle term I figured red epic gems would go for around 4k raw and 5-6k cut. The other colors about 1.5-2k raw and 2-3k cut. I felt this would continue until several guilds have been farming most of the new bosses for a while, upgraded most of their gear, gemmed it with epic gems and began getting more epic gems than they use. It's hard to predict how long this phase will last, it could be just a month or so or it could last for several months.

For the long term I expected red epic gems would eventually drop to around 2k raw, 3k cut and other colors to 1k raw, 1.5-2k cut. This could take several months, particularly for red gems. Other colors will almost certainly drop in price sooner and possibly much sooner than red.

Of course there are other factors that could affect the market by increasing the availability of epic gems. For example the possible future addition of transmutes, prospecting, vendors or any other new source of gems could cause prices to drop further and faster.

Then the patch finally landed....

What actually happened
As expected the price of the first few gems posted on the auction were outrageous. The first Queen's Garnet (red) was posted for 25k. Naturally the sheep (or lemmings) followed by posting at prices like 24,999g. Around 24 hours later someone finally posted one for 24k. Non reds were posted for 10k+ and most more like 20k.

I started out barking trade to buy red gems for 4k and other colors for 2k. I got a couple non reds for 2k and that was it. No reds at all, everyone thought they could get 20k+ because "4k? LAWL! They're going for 25k on the auction!". Another player was spamming trade constantly for reds, offering 3k at first, then 4k when he noticed that's what I was offering.

After a couple days I'd only gotten 1 or 2 more gems and still no reds so I bumped my buy prices to 5k for reds and 2.5k for the other colors. I got my first red gem that night and started getting a few more of the other colors though I paid 3k for the very first of most colors.

I posted my first red gem for 10k raw and the other colors for 6-7k. Intentionally higher than I thought they'd sell for but not insanely high like everyone else. I wasn't expecting many (if any) to sell. All I wanted to accomplish with the first few gems was to stabilize the market and educate people that 10k+ prices were not just unrealistic but completely unreasonable.

Over the next couple days I picked up a few more gems. Whenever I got a 2nd gem of a particular non red color I'd cut the most popular cut for that color and post it for 7k. Purified, Reckless, Puissant, Fractured, etc.. I got a couple more red gems and hung onto them raw, just posting one for 10k since everyone else was still posting red for 20k+.

Then, someone bought my raw red gem for 10k and re-posted it for 16k. I posted another for 10k. He bought that one out the next day too and posted 2 for 13k each. I posted another for 10k. 12 hours later he posted both of his for 12k each. The next day he was posting them a little under 10k, less than he'd bought them from me at in the first place.

I sold a few non red cut gems for 5-7k too, about 1 a day or every other day while slowly building up a small inventory of gems. Most days I got enough raw gems to replenish stock as it sold and get 1 or 2 new cuts posted. I picked up a few more red gems for 5k each, cut 1 each of bold, brilliant, delicate posted them for 7500k and started dropping my maximum prices on the other 5 colors by 500g per day.

Over the next few days I sold 1 cut red gem and a few more of the other colors. I dropped my maximum selling prices for reds to 7k, other colors to 4.5k and my buy prices to 4k and 2k respectively. Two of my cut reds sold for 7k the next day so I raised my maximum sale price on them back to 7.5k. Nobody is undercutting me on red gems yet, or if they have, their's sold before I noticed them. I sold several more of the other colors too, mostly in the 3-4k range and 2 or 3 for 4.5+.

That's where things are sitting now. I didn't manage to buy any more reds for 4k and very few of the other colors for 2k yet. Today I started offering 5k for reds again but I'm sticking with 2k for the other colors. Selling prices I'm sticking with 7.5k for reds and down to 4.25k max for non reds.

What's Next
I'll probably drop my maximum sale price for non reds to 4k tomorrow and depending on how buying more works out, 3.5k or even 3k within a week. For red gems a 5k buy price and 7.5k sell price seems to be the sweet spot so I think I'll stick with those prices until I start seeing them cheaper than that on the AH.

I expect reds will stay at 5k raw and 5-7k cut for quite a while yet. No doubt many will be posted even higher but I don't think they'll sell very well. Mine sold very slowly at 7.5k anyhow and that was with almost no competition. Demand for red gems should continue to grow as more guilds progress further and get new gear that needs gems. As guilds start doing heroic modes and getting BiS gear demand will grow even more. I don't see red prices dropping significantly until several guilds are far enough along on progression and farming to be producing surplus red gems beyond what they need for themselves.

Non red gems I expect to continue slowly spiraling downward in price until they're around 1k raw and 2k cut. Lava Coral and Shadow Spinel will likely fall faster than the others. The reason being those gems are available in greater supply since they both (and Queen's Garnet too) drop from Elementium-Coated Geode while the other 3 do not. This is already starting to happen especially with Shadow Spinel which doesn't have as many good cuts as Lava Coral. Lightstone, Deepholm Iolite and even Elven Peridot are usually 3-5k uncut on the auction, Shadow Spinel 2.5k - 4k and Lava Coral anywhere from 2.5k to 5k.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-44488829951649860022011-12-10T22:53:00.026-07:002011-12-28T19:39:15.574-07:00TSM Blacklist ModificationIn a prior post Dealing with obsessive campers - Part II advanced I detailed how I modifed TSM's post.lua to calculate price cuts differently to bring prices down fast and discourage camping. At the time my server was literally infested with campers and auction bots. There were so many campers at that time the best approach was an indiscriminate blanket approach that simply lowered prices quickly until the camping stopped..

Conditions are a little different now. There's far more cooperation between big auction players, fewer obsessive campers and the worst of the campers (the bot) transferred. On top of which demand is high and supply lower than in the past. I found the old approach too extreme for current conditions but there are still a few obsessive campers in certain markets. A more targeted approach is needed so I tweaked my modification to use the blacklist and only target specific campers.

Most of it still works the same as before except it only kicks in for blacklisted players.

How it works

By default all TSM's blacklist does is ignore your threshold and continue undercutting blacklisted players posting below threshold no matter how low the price goes. This modification changes the way the blacklist works by changing how the undercut is calculated when (and only when) undercutting a player on the blacklist.

For all other posters (posters not blacklisted) undercut calculations are the same as usual.

For blacklisted users, "undercut by" settings of 50c or less are considered to be percentages 1-50%.
The undercut will be 1-50% of the difference between the current lowest price (the camper's price) and your threshold price.

Finally, I changed it to not ever post under your threshold. Not even for blacklisted players.

All of the above only kicks in for blacklisted players. When the lowest priced item was posted by a player not blacklisted everything works as per normal.

In addition maximum price is used just a little differently. If the lowest price is higher than your Fallback * Maximum Price, it will post at Fallback * Maximum Price. The original code would just post at Fallback instead. This is the only bit that kicks in for all posters not just blacklisted posters. If you don't like this bit there's a comment in the " -- Check if we're posting something too high" section of the replacement code with a small change you can make to revert to original behavior.

Modifying the code

WARNING - This requires editing the code of TSM post.lua. If you don't know what you're doing or feel uncomfortable editing code, don't try this. A mistake could break things so badly you'll wind up having to reinstall and reconfigure TSM from scratch.

1. Open Post.lua in a text editor and make the following changes. (Note: If you can't find the file you really shouldn't be attempting this!)

2. Make a backup copy of Post.lua (named Post.lua.original or something) just in case you mess things up.

3. In the function Post:QueueItemToPost(queue) find "-- Check if we're posting something too high". It should be on line 420 in the latest version posted 2 Dec 2011 on Curse. Cut that line and everything else after it in to the end of that section of the code *except* the final "end" statement. 17 lines in total (counting empty lines) up to and including line 436. Leave the "end" statement that was on line 437 before the cut alone.

4. In place of the code you just cut insert the following code.
Many feel that co-operation is doomed to fail few believe it works. For the record I'd like to say it can work and very well, especially when you get enough big players involved.

On my server (Antonidas US) there's long been a couple factions that competed hard and didn't like each other very much.

The first was the "Glyph Cartel" which has been around controlling the Antonidas (US) glyph market since before my time on the server. The cartel had 16 or so members with 3 or 4 main guys. One of them was pretty much always online watching over glyphs. They pretty much ran the glyph market a couple years ago. They matched prices with whitelists and had a number of other rules regarding the undercut amount (1c), maximum number of glyphs to post at one time (3), policy and proceedure for resetting prices and so on. This worked extremely well for them until my group started competing with them.

The second was a group I put together of mostly gem sellers and a few anti-cartel scribes. We kept 2 whitelists, a general purpose one for gems, chants and just about everything else and a smaller list just for glyphs. We kept things simple with just 1 rule, whitelist the other guys and that was it. No other limits. Those of us on the glyph list thought of ourselves as the Anti-Cartel Cartel. :) This worked extremely well for us too though with 2 competing groups fighting for control of the glyph market glyphs were usually in the tank.

Since most of our guys were into other things besides just glyphs we really didn't care if glyphs weren't very profitable. As long as we weren't losing gold and the original Glyph Cartel wasn't stopping our glyph sales *and making a killing we were happy. Meanwhile the orginal Glyph Cartel slowly began moving into other markets, competing with us and driving prices down in those markets too.

We had 2 different groups cooperating within their own group and competing with each other and it worked for both sides albeit in a high volume, low margin way.

Then there was the "bot". A player who was online 24/7, had multiple accounts and was into pretty much everything *except glyphs. He sold gold, botted the auction 24/7 and used every dirty trick in the book trying to drive off the competition and especially me. After a long drawn out 2 year price war he finally transferred to another server. His constant botting had a very adverse effect on the server economy. Due to his constant never-ending manipulation of the auction and abuse of the economy prices were a crazy roller coaster of extreme highs and lows. Nearly everyone else camped too because if they didn't nobody sold much of anything except him. He's been gone since the middle of september and the economy has slowly been recovering to a more normal one. There's still very much of a camper mentality but things have been getting better.

When patch 4.3 came along sales really took off. Prices continued to rise in spite of the best efforts of both cartels to lower the other side's profits and interfere with their sales as much as possible. Both sides did realize completely stopping the other side was going to be impossible with the demand there is now. After a couple days of this a few of us started talking about all cooperating together. Several of us got on vent, came to an agreement very quickly and spent maybe half an hour setting up whitelists and such. Then we spent the rest of the night, far into the wee hours talking about all kinds of unrelated stuff. It turns out we actually have a lot in common.

We have only one hard rule. Whitelist the other guys and match their price (both bid and buyout) when their's is lowest. We encourage everyone to keep the amount of items posted at a time down to reasonable numbers in order to keep from flooding but we don't enforce any particular numbers. We also encourage letting the little guys sell some too, not using big undercuts too often and buying out the few extreme lowballers who keep trying to crash markets. We consider these to be guidelines not rules. Generally following them helps keep prices up but being guidelines rather than rules written in stone gives the agreement more flexibility and makes it easier for everyone to buy into it.

Over the next day or so we got the rest of both sides on board and now have pretty much all of the major auction players co-operating instead of fighting. After a few days prices are up and profits are much better pretty much across the board. Gross sales are up, profit margins are up and of course so are total profits. We're all spending much less time online compared to before and none of us is canceling and re-posting anywhere near as much as before either.

Everyone is enthusiastic about the new arrangements and says it's working great so far. There have been a few hiccups along the way (like someone missing a name on their whitelist) but things like that get sorted out fast and everyone's happy. When someone else turns up trying to crash prices (shadowspirit diamonds for example) he now has several big auction players buying him out almost immediately and thanking him for saving us the crafting time. Gotta love that guy who keeps trying to crash shadowspirits, I haven't had to craft any of the top 5 cuts in days now and I'm selling them for more than double what I buy them from him at.

So the conclusion is, yes co-operation does work and the more you have co-operating the better it works!MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-90092428450247840142011-11-30T11:15:00.015-07:002011-12-28T19:39:44.818-07:00Epic Gem Transmutes and Day 1 of Patch 4.3Epic Gem Transmutes
4.3 has been out for a full day now and there's still no news regarding epic gem transmutes. When the patch first came out and transmutes weren't on any vendors most of us assumed they must be raid drops but after a full day with no reports of any dropping on any server it doesn't look like that's it either.

That probably means epic gem transmutes are either:

- not intended to be available yet (IMO most likely), or
- something is broken preventing them from dropping / showing up on a vendor.

At this point I'm going to assume that epic gem transmutes while they may be in the data files are not yet obtainable in game and will not be anytime soon. Maybe in some later patch a few months down the road, maybe not until the next expansion or maybe never.

Day 1 Update
Day one of the patch is over. Sales were pretty decent for me but not nearly as good as day 1 of patch 4.2, mostly because this time there was a lot more competition. Last year I pretty much had the auction to myself for the first day. This time there were lots of people camping the auction most of the day.

I made at least 100k profit, probably more like 150k yesterday. It's hard to say exactly how much but my gold total went up about 150k and that's in spite of spending a lot on things like Chaos Orbs (I may have overpaid a bit for the first couple hundred or so) and buying out cheap gems, chants, etc., to reset prices.

All in all a pretty decent day.

This morning my server's prices on green, blue and yellow gems are mostly in the tank again (most under 20g) though a few cuts are still selling for much more. Red gems are still doing great with the 3 main cuts holding strong at 200g+, orange and purple are doing ok with roughly a third of the cuts tanked running 30-40g, another third holding strong at 60g+ (many over 100g) and the rest at 40-60g.

Chants are selling in volume and prices are slowly picking up as competitors run out of stock. The same for other gear enhancements like leg armors, belt buckles and spellthreads. Even flask prices have picked up and are selling better than usual.

Epic gem prices are outrageous. The first red gem posted was 25k. Most gems (of any color) posted since are in the 10-20k range. None of them are selling at those prices. The few in the 5-10k range don't seem to be selling either though I figure a few might sell for 5k. I managed to pick up a Lava Coral for 2.5k out of trade chat, cut it into Reckless and posted it for 7.5k. I didn't expect it to sell for that much and it didn't so I reposted it for 5k today.

Glyphs are as usual on my server... Heavily camped and tanked with all glyphs except the new one at 30g or less and most under 15g. They'll stay that way until the perpetual camper stops too.

The new Glyph of Shadow is high priced but isn't selling very well. I sold 2 or 3 for 500g and another 1 for 249g and that was with virtually no competition.

Other notes
The patch broke Auctioneer badly, turn it off.

Most other auction addons worked though with some problems. Tradeskillmaster and Auctionator both have updates available to fix the problems now.

Most other addons worked ok and many had updates available. A couple notable ones with updates available are Macaroon! (bar mod) and SUF (unit frames mod). The old version of Macaroon! did not work at all but the update was available at patch launch so it wasn't a big deal.
Tomorrow according to a just released blizzard status update.

The following is an assortment of facts we can be reasonably certain of as well as my own speculations, conclusions and expectations that I've been taking into account while preparing for patch 4.3.

Potion materials requirements are being greatly reduced. Most cataclysm potions will take just a single herb and a vial to make. Expect potion prices to drop significantly and once players get used to new low prices they should start selling in greater numbers too.

Epic gem transmutes. We don't know what the materials costs will be and we don't know how the cooldowns will work either. We don't even know for sure if they'll be in the patch though it seems very likely. Blizzard hasn't said a thing about transmutes but from what they have said about the availability of epic gems don't except an instant gold mine. Transmutes will likely be limited by both high materials costs and long and/or shared cooldowns.

Rare gems. Expect demand for rare gems, especially inferno rubies, to skyrocket. Prices will go way up too and for the better cuts (again especially infernos) should stay up for months.

Pyrite and Truegold. None of the new patterns use truegold... Unless Blizzard pulls a fast one and changes a bunch of recipes to use truegold instead of Hardened Elementium at the last minute. We probably aren't going to get epic gems from prospecting pyrite either. Prices for both truegold and pyrite are already down, expect them to remain low. The good news is prices probably won't drop any lower than they are now and may even go back up somewhat due to prospecting pyrite for rare gems.

Chaos Orbs will be BoE. Expect prices to rise initially with multiple players continually barking trade trying to corner the market on them. Demand should be high enough to hold prices relatively high for at least a few months but eventually they'll drop way down as has happened with all other "orbs" that have become BoE in the past.

It's possible they'll make Dreamcloth BoE too. Don't count on it but don't be surprised if they do either. If dreamcloth does become BoE, expect prices to follow the same pattern as chaos orbs.

Maelstrom Shatter. Enchanters will be able to shatter maelstrom crystals into 2 heavenly shards. Expect the price of heavenly shards to go way down initially and then rather quickly go back up. Maelstroms should steadily increase in price. Eventually they'll stabilize with crystals going for roughly twice as much as shards. I expect prices will eventually settle down around 75g per shard and 150g per crystal.

New gear means greatly increased demand for gear enhancements. Spellthreads, leg armors, enchants, belt buckles, gems will all see much higher demand and higher prices will follow.

Naturally with higher demand for so many different crafted goods, demand and prices for common cataclysm materials will rise too. Prices of cataclysm herbs, ore, bars, gems, enchanting materials, leather, hides, volatiles and so on should all rise.

Update: According to wowhead PTR data it seems the new patterns do take truegold now after all. I figured they might do that all along. Now I gotta wonder when the change was made and unless it just happened today how'd I miss it? Thanks to Itzal for pointing this out.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-39498527946172958952011-11-17T18:13:00.005-07:002011-12-28T19:41:14.042-07:00Addons and User Interface - Data Brokers every good goblin should haveData broker plugins are addon threads for displays using LibDataBroker. A data broker display like Fubar, Titan Panel, or my personal favorite Chocolatebar is required to use data broker plugins.

Many plugins display additional information when you mouse over them and/or have drop-down menus allowing you to clean up your user interface yet still have quick and easy access to everything. By adding plugins you can set up a broker display mod to show virtually anything you want exactly where you want it.

Chocolatebar

Creates a bar at the top or bottom of your display where other addons called broker plugins can display things like your fps, latency, gold earned, and much, much more.
Another handy addon from Ara. This one shows you all your tradeskills on all characters. It shows cooldowns, including which ones are up and how long it will be until the others will be up again. You can also open and view the tradeskills for any character on the account.
I can use a custom bar mod (Macaroon!) for abilities and macros while Broker Micromenu takes care of things like opening a ticket or viewing the character. It also displays FPS and Latency, putting many seldom used but useful things into a small space where they're unobtrusive yet still readily accessible for when you do need them..

If you're looking to find more broker plugins there's a nice big list of broker plugins over at WoW Ace complete with pictures for most of them. Mouse over the thumbnail pictures there to see larger pictures.

Addon Control Panel isn't a display broker or plugin but it comes in real handy for turning various mods on/off and reloading the UI without leaving the game... Like you'll be doing when trying out a bunch of new data broker plugins.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-86013322480294427582011-11-13T17:59:00.008-07:002011-11-13T18:41:20.112-07:00Brief history of a scammerThat crook Markco is at it again with yet another scam. Faid over at Nerf Faids has done a nice detailed video expose of his latest scam, the so called WoW Crusher Addon.

WoW Crusher claims to make you the best at everything (yes everything) on your server.

It slices, it dices, it even cuts tin cans! It cures colds, flu, whatever ails you, even cancer! It cleans, calcium, rust, lime, grease, all the worst most difficult to clean up messes in just seconds and you don't even have to wipe it off, everything just disappears like magic!

You get the picture, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true. Snake oil sales at it's worst. This isn't the first time Markco's been caught in shady business. He's been doing it for years. Here's a brief history of some of his more obvious scams and shady dealings over the years.
Read the comments too, it's hilarious how he tries to weasel his way out of things with more lies and constantly tries to change the subject.

He claims to have sold the JMTC website and the name Markco for 50 thousand dollars but many fellow bloggers don't believe that. More likely it's just another lie in an attempt to disassociate himself from all the crooked business going on there.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-62103791792322907422011-11-06T20:53:00.014-07:002011-12-28T19:44:18.756-07:00Tips and Tricks - TSM Custom Reset MethodPosting walls of items works well to squeeze and discourage campers. The idea is you post multiple items at prices the campers really don't like. Lower than they like selling at, yet higher than and too many of than they'll buy you out at.

The camper then has 3 choices:

1. Undercut you anyhow
2. Buy you out and attempt to reset prices
3. Stop posting until the price goes up again

In my experience most campers will continue to undercut for a while anyhow. That's fine, let the campers work their butts off for peanuts for a while. All you have to do is post enough items often enough to keep the price low and discourage buyout attempts until they stop camping.

Campers figure if they can stop all your sales for a while you'll lose gold on deposits and give up. That only works on the little guys and the casuals. All it's going to do with an experienced goblin who's in it for the long haul is get his attention focused on making things difficult for the camper(s) in question. The goblin won't be losing gold either. He'll be making less gold, but that bothers campers a lot more than it bothers goblins.

The biggest problem with walls is getting your walls up at high enough prices to discourage buyouts while at the same time being low enough to keep the pressure on the campers. If you post too high they'll gleefully undercut you forever and you won't sell much. If you post too low then you might wind up being the one working your butt off for peanuts and that's no good. Worst of all if you post too low the campers might buy you out and reset prices much higher.

Ideally to prevent buyouts you want at least 3 walls at low, medium and high prices. Or better yet think of it as low, medium and high profit margins. The low priced wall puts the pressure on, the high priced wall caps the market and the medium priced wall discourages buying out the pressure wall and re-posting just under the cap wall.

Let's say you're battling an obsessive gem camper who mostly focuses on Inferno Rubies and Ember Topaz (hi phlox).

The three important Inferno Ruby cuts sell fast enough the simplest and most effective thing to do is just post and forget 5 or 10 of each at a time. Keep an eye on the camper and post several times a day for 24 hours with threshold near cost (the price you can normally buy raw gems in enough bulk to not run out at), fallback 150-200% cost and 10-20% undercut. Enough will sell you really don't need to do anything more complicated. If a camper tries to stop your sales completely he's going to have to camp hardcore posting at or near cost. He won't do that for long, especially not if you occasionally buy him out when he goes under your threshold and re-post his gems for more.

Ember Topaz on the other hand are a little trickier, particularly if the camper posts them cut under the usual bulk buy price for raw gems. There are so many different cuts, most of which sell fairly well, it'd take an awful lot of stock to do the same as with Inferno Rubies. Fewer walls (3 or 4 at most) with steeper undercuts works better here. The problem with this is there's a bigger gap between walls making buying out the low priced wall more tempting.

Reset Method tells TSM what do when prices are below your threshold. The options are to post at fallback, threshold, to not post and to post at a custom value. If you set reset method to threshold someone might buy you out anyhow if they see an opportunity for a big price jump. If you set it to fallback they'll just 1c undercut you forever. What's needed here is a wall priced a little higher than the threshold wall. Over the bulk buy price on raw gems but not by too much.

This is where TSM Custom Reset Method comes in handy. The high and low priced walls are easy to maintain with Threshold, Fallback and Undercut settings. Custom Reset Method only comes into play when the price is below your threshold. Simply set Custom Reset Method to somewhere between your threshold and fallback (closer to threshold usually works best) and it'll post at that price when prices are below your threshold.

Unfortunately Custom Reset Method can't be set any higher than 100g so while it works just fine for gems and glyphs it isn't suitable for everything. It's really too bad it can't be set higher because it'd be great for chants, belt buckles, leg armors, spellthreads or anything else that sells in volume and is heavily camped.

In fact I'd love to see custom reset method expanded to allow it to change everything about the reset post from price to duration, stack size and number of auctions posted.
MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-89589848567007286032011-11-03T18:47:00.009-06:002011-12-28T19:45:14.932-07:00Tradeskillmaster Mailing - Quick Setup TutorialTSM_Mailing handles mass mailing items to other characters. In a nutshell what it does is you load up your bags with things you want to mail off, open the mailbox, press a button and it automatically mails everything off for you. It will fill up all 12 mail slots whenever possible.

It's particularly good for sending bulk mail to alts. It does not handle sending CoDs, just regular mail so it's not very good for selling in bulk.

Configuration

Configuration is pretty easy, nothing like configuring the auctioning or crafting modules.

Type /tsm and click the "Mailing options" icon on the right side of the window. The mailing options tab has 3 options at the top:

1. Auto recheck mail
2. Don't display money received
3. Send items individually

Leave them all off (not checked).

Below those options is a "Player name" text entry field. Add the name of a player you want it to send mail to and hit enter. Make sure you spell the name correctly. If you spell the name wrong it will send the mail to the wrong person!

The player name will appear in the list to the left. Now click on the player name in the list. Two lists will appear "Items / groups to add" and "Items / groups to remove". The left list contains everything in your bags and all your TSM_Auctioning Groups. Select everything you want mailed to the character in this list and hit the "Add>>" button to move it into the list.

Sending Mail

That's all there is to configuration. Once you have it configured simply fill up your bags with stuff you want to mail, open the mailbox and hit the "Tradeskillmaster_Mailing: Auto-mail" button you'll now see on top of the mailbox window.

One caveat, mailing gets laggy with large configs. The larger your mailing config gets the worse the lag gets. The lag can be so bad it's really not even usable. How big your config can be before that happens probably depends mostly on your cpu. I tried setting it up with settings for all Cataclysm gems (uncommon, rare, raw and cut) once. The lag that caused was so bad I had trouble just closing the mailbox to make it stop! With that in mind I recommend only using TSM_Mailing to mail a limited number of big bulk items like ore and herbs.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-18438003528235819522011-10-28T16:54:00.023-06:002012-11-02T16:34:37.152-06:00Tradeskillmaster Auctioning - Quick Setup TutorialThis is the first in a series of quick setup tutorials to help new TSM users get the most used modules up and running quickly. I'll be covering basic setup and configuration for the 4 most commonly used modules, Auctioning, Crafting, Mailing and Shopping-Dealfinding. I won't go into detail on every possible setting or option, just the important ones. This first post covers setup and configuration for TSM Auctioning.

Before starting make sure you have a few items you want to post in your bags.

To open the configuration window, either click the TSM button on the minimap or type /tsm

TSM Auctioning

The module that handles posting auctions is probably the first module most users will want to get up and running. It's one of the most complex modules to configure but we're just going to worry about basic settings to get you up and running and ignore the rest for now. First some definitions:

Threshold - the lowest price you want to post at.

Fallback - the highest price you want to post at.

Category - Categories are the first of 2 levels of item organization in TSM.

Group - Groups are second level of organization in TSM.

There are 3 levels of override settings, global default settings, category overrides and group overrides. Global defaults apply to any setting that hasn't been overridden at the category or group level. Category overrides apply to any group setting that hasn't been overridden at the group level. Any group settings without values set will use the values from the Category the group is in and any category settings without values set will take their values from the global default settings.

Configuration settings order of precedence: Group > Category > Default

Ok, moving on to doing the actual configuration.

Default Settings

We need to set some global defaults. While it might be tempting to skip this step it will help prevent expensive mistakes later. You don't want to forget to set the price range for a new group some day and wind up posting an item worth 40 or 50k gold and losing thousands of gold because it sold for 100g before you noticed the configuration gaffe. To prevent that from happening set your global default prices high enough to cover the most expensive things you sell. I recommend global defaults of 40k Threshold and 60k Fallback to cover high end BoE gear.

To change the global defaults type /tsm, click "Categories / Groups" in the list on the left side of the window and select the "General" tab. This tab has a lot of options you'll have to scroll down to see them all. The most important thing here is to set your threshold and fallback settings to high values.

Other settings you might want to change are:

Post time - How long auctions will be posted for

Post cap - How many auctions to post
Per Auction - How many items in each post (stack size)
Undercut by - How much to undercut by
Price threshold - The lowest price you want to post at (per unit price)
Fallback price - The highest price you want to post at (per unit price)
Reset Method - What to do when prices are under your lowest price

Suggested values that should work for most players are:

Post time 12 hours
Post cap 1
Per Auction 1
Undercut by 1c
Price threshold 40000g
Fallback price 60000g
Reset Method - whatever suits your posting style best

Again, if you change nothing else in this part of the configuration, I recommend at least setting Price threshold and Fallback price to very high values.

Categories and Groups

Now we need to set up some Categories, Groups and put items into the groups.

Click on "Categories / Groups" in the list to the left and select the "Create Category / Group" tab.

First make a Category by entering the name you want it to have into the "Category Name" box at the bottom of the window and hit enter to save it. If the category is going to contain gems, you might name it "Gems". A new category named Gems will appear in the list to the left.

Now create a group, let's use "Cut Inferno Rubies" for example purposes. Creating groups is the same as creating categories except you use the "Group Name" box at the top of the window to enter the name. A new group named "Cut Inferno Rubies will appear in the list to the left. Create more gem groups named for example, "Cut Ember Topaz", "Cut Demonseye" and so on.

Click on "Gems" category > Add / Remove Groups. Two lists will appear in this tab, "Uncategorized Groups" and "Groups in this Category". All the groups you just created should be listed in "Uncategorized Groups". Highlight all of them by clicking on them and then hit the "Add>>" button near the center of the window. All your gem groups will be moved into the "Groups in this Category" list and should now be listed under the "gems" category in the master list on the far left.

Move to the master list on the far left (the list with "Options" at the very top. Click on the "Gems" category and select the "Category Overrides" tab.

Right clicking on an override setting will toggle the override for that particular setting on or off (off meaning it uses default settings from the level above it, on meaning it's overriding the default setting with a value specific for the category or group you're in).

Now set category overrides for the following settings to be more specific to the category. For a gem category (with cataclysm rare gems being the best gems at the time of writing) I recommend something like the following:

Post time 12 hours
Post cap 2
Per Auction 1
Undercut by 1c
Price threshold 100g
Fallback price 200g
Reset Method - Whatever suits your style

Click on each gem group in turn, go to the "Add / Remove Items" tab and "Add>>" items you want in the group. At least one of each item you want to add must be in your bags to add it. For single item groups if you give the group the exact same name as the item, the item will be automatically added to the group for you upon creation. In that case you can simply shift-click the item into the group name box when creating the group.

Finally click on each group within the "Gems" category in turn again and override the same settings to ones more suitable for the appropriate gem type in each group. Mostly you'll want to adjust Price threshold and Fallback price values here. For example you might want to change Demonseye and Ember Topaz to 20g threshold, leave Inferno Rubies alone and change the other 3 rare gem colors to 5 or 10g threshold and 25-50g fallback.

If you like to camp a lot a post cap of 1 or 2 with high fallback price is probably best. If you tend to leave your auctions up until they expire then a post cap of 2-5 with fallback around normal market price on your server and a threshold of 10-20% over your cost will likely work better for you.

The more categories and groups you split things up into the more fine control you'll have over posting settings later. I like to split my gems up into several groups for each color with individual groups for the very best selling cuts like Purified, Reckless, Puissant, another for gems that sell well and another for the ones that sell more slowly. Inferno Rubies just get 2 groups, one for the 3 cuts that sell like crazy and another for the other 2 cuts.

Wow! It's great for glyph posters, especially those who use just a single posting character.

I've had my glyph business operating efficiently and mostly /afk for quite a while now but there was one thing that was still so tedious and annoying that I hated doing it. The thing I hated was swapping the glyphs in my bags. Dumping the glyphs in my bags into the bank and getting another bunch of glyphs from the bank. It was time consuming and took an awful lot of mouse clicks. Bankstack is terrific for sorting items in your bank and bags but I found it's bank deposit and withdrawal functions lacking a lot. I've been looking for a mod to make this chore easier for a while and finally found it in Dumpster.

Thanks go out to Steed of the Consortium for mentioning Dumpster in his excellent post optimizing glyph operations on a single toon. This post was the one that convinced me to try Dumpster and I'm sure glad I did! The post itself is a great read with a comprehensive strategy full of detailed explanations, theory and plenty of useful tips.

My own current glyph posting strategy all about popularity and stealth is similar in many ways though I'm using two posters, one focusing on just the most popular glyphs and a 2nd poster covering all the rest. Dumpster doesn't help the popular glyph poster since all his glyphs fit in one set of bags anyhow but it's a godsend for the other poster. The 2nd poster needs to swap glyphs and post twice to post all of his glyphs. Dumpster has cut the time spent swapping glyphs from a few minutes to about 4 seconds. About 2 seconds to dump and another 2 seconds to refill my bags.

As explained in Steed's post all you need to do to handle glyph swapping is make 4 macros. Two to dump half the glyphs each into the bank and another two to take them out of the bank.

Macro 1

/dout glyph /t "Classes: Druid"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Paladin"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Warrior"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Death Knight"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Rogue"

Macro 2

/dout glyph /t "Classes: Priest"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Warlock"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Hunter"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Mage"
/dout glyph /t "Classes: Shaman"

The above handle taking glyphs out of the bank. To put glyphs into the bank simply make duplicate copies of both macros with "/dout" changed to "/din" (without the quotes). If you have a single poster handling all the glyphs you won't be able to fit all the glyphs for 5 classes into a single set of bags so you'll have to go with 6 macros instead (3 /din and 3 /dout).

Similar macros can be made for Gems, Chants or anything else you might have massive stocks of. The command syntax is fairly intuitive with plenty of options to control exactly what (and how many) gets put into or taken out of the bank. To see all of the usage options simply type /dumpster.

Note: Dumpster works much better and faster with personal banks than with guild banks. From comments I've read elsewhere this seems to have something to do with recent changes made to guild banks.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-813683889078209798.post-23748784969798519392011-10-24T08:29:00.001-06:002011-10-24T09:17:31.052-06:00Backpacks and disposable altsIf you're looking for earthshaking news, controversy or imaginative speculation you won't find it here... At least not today. :)

All I have for today is a quick tip

Low level disposable posting alts come in handy sometimes. If the competition is going out of their way to grief you it's nice to be able to delete an alt they know about and make a new one they don't know is you yet. It'll usually take them a while to figure it out too.

Or some competitors might not be out to get you personally, just anyone who dares try to make gold in *thier* markets. They'll leave a new name alone for a little while but once they decide you might be serious competition the gloves come off. It might be more profitable to just make a new alt rather than fight a war.

A lot of people tend to use 16 slot Netherweave bags for bank alts because they're so cheap. The bags get destroyed when you delete an alt and you have to buy new bags for the next new alt. Not a big deal for ah goblins really but there's a better bag option for disposable alts you don't intend to keep for long.

Why spend 30-50g on bags every time you make a new alt if you don't have to?

Traveler's Backpacks are 16 slot bags too and they don't bind on use. You just buy one set of 4 bags and after that you just keep mailing them off to the next new alt.MoxNixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12407914481361718041noreply@blogger.com1
